Natural Relief for Tendonitis
Acupuncture is most popularly known for treating pain. While it can be used for numerous conditions when conventional treatments fall short, many seek natural solutions like Chinese medicine. While pain can be complex, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a clear understanding by categorizing it precisely.
As TCM practitioners, we strive to be as detailed as possible in describing pain, so we ask patients to specify if it is sharp, stabbing, achy, dull, pins-and-needles, numbness, tingling, etc. We also inquire about the origin: Does the pain travel up or down? Is it better upon waking or worse at the end of the day? Is it affected by weather? Does it improve or worsen with movement? These details are crucial for a proper diagnosis.
What Is Tendonitis?
One of the many conditions TCM can treat is tendonitis. Tendonitis is a common, painful condition affecting many people. It refers to inflammation of the tendons—thick fibers that attach muscle to bone. Tendonitis results from injury or overuse, particularly from repetitive motions such as when playing sports (e.g., golfer’s elbow), nursing (de Quervain’s syndrome), or running (Achilles tendonitis). A sudden injury can also cause tendonitis, and while it can occur in any tendon, the most common areas affected are the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and heels.
Common symptoms of tendonitis include:
- Pain that worsens with certain movements
- A pulling or grating sensation in the tendon
- Swelling or the appearance of a lump
- Warmth or redness in the affected area
- Tenderness or a sensation similar to a bruise when touched
TCM approaches tendonitis by addressing both the root cause and symptoms, aiming to restore balance in the body. Through techniques like acupuncture, herbal remedies, and therapeutic massage, an eastern approach promotes healing, reduces inflammation, and improves mobility.
When to See a Doctor: Tendonitis vs. Tendinosis
You should see a doctor if everyday activities become painful. If left untreated, chronic tendonitis can develop into tendinosis, a more serious condition caused by long-term inflammation of the tendon.
Tendonitis and tendinosis are both conditions affecting the tendons, but they differ in their cause, nature, and treatment.
- Tendonitis refers to the acute inflammation of a tendon, often triggered by sudden injury or repetitive overuse. It is typically characterized by pain, swelling, warmth, and tenderness around the affected area. Tendonitis is usually short-term and responds well to rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, and treatments like acupuncture or physical therapy.
- Tendinosis, on the other hand, is a chronic breakdown and degeneration of tendon fibers, often without inflammation. It occurs when the tendon doesn’t heal properly from repeated micro-injuries, leading to stiffness, pain, and loss of flexibility. This is more challenging to treat and may require a longer recovery period with targeted therapies such as stretching, strengthening exercises, and regenerative treatments like shockwave therapy or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections.
You should see a doctor if everyday activities, like lifting and walking, become painful. You may need medical attention if pain persists for more than a few weeks or symptoms are worsening despite rest or treatment, and limited range of motion in the affected area. If left untreated, chronic tendonitis can develop into tendinosis.
Is There A Natural Treatment For Tendonitis?
If you’re seeking natural, non-invasive options to treat tendonitis, you’re not alone. Many people prefer holistic treatments to avoid the potential side effects of medications or surgical interventions. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a range of effective, natural therapies that address both the symptoms and root causes of tendonitis. By focusing on restoring balance within the body, TCM promotes healing and long-term relief.
Acupuncture
From competitive athletes to weekend warriors, many struggle with inflammation and tendonitis. Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for tendonitis, offering relief without the side effects of medications or injections. According to a systematic review by Marcus Gadau et al. (2014), acupuncture is more effective than steroid injections, NSAIDs, and ultrasound in treating lateral epicondylitis or “tennis elbow,” one of the most common types of tendonitis. Furthermore, results showed that acupuncture was consistently more effective than sham acupuncture, as well as other conventional treatments.
Traditional Chinese medicine is a proven method for treating painful conditions like tendonitis. TCM can accelerate recovery, relieve pain, relax muscles and tendons, increase range of motion, and boost energy. It can also aid sleep and balance mental and emotional well-being. For athletes, acupuncture can prevent surgery or aid in pre- and post-surgery recovery, making it an excellent complement to other treatments.
