Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that uses gentle heat from the herb mugwort (called moxa) to warm and stimulate specific acupuncture points and areas of the body. In TCM, moxa is especially helpful for patterns of cold and dampness, which can show up as fatigue, heaviness in the body, sluggish digestion, loose stools, bloating, chronic aches, or pain that feels worse in cold or rainy weather. By warming the channels and improving circulation, moxibustion helps the body “dry dampness,” strengthen digestion, and support the body’s natural energy and immune function.
Moxibustion is also well known for its use in pregnancy—especially for supporting the body in cases of breech presentation. When appropriate, moxa may be used on specific acupuncture points (most commonly on the feet) to encourage movement and support optimal fetal positioning. In many cases, patients are able to safely continue moxibustion at home with clear guidance from their practitioner, making it a simple and effective way to support treatment between visits.
