Most people don’t walk into a clinic saying “my body feels out of balance.”
They usually say things like: I feel bloated all the time. I’m exhausted even when I sleep. I don’t feel like myself anymore.
That was exactly the case with a 34-year-old patient who came into my Houston practice feeling puffy, tired, and frustrated with her body. She wanted to lose around 10 pounds, but more than that, she wanted to feel normal again.
I’m Jenny Vargas, a Licensed Acupuncturist and Board-Certified Herbalist at Natural Point Acupuncture & Herbs in Meyerland. This is a case study of how her body responded over the first month of herbal medicine treatment, and what that shift tells us about how healing works in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

INITIAL CONSULTATION
At her first visit, she came in expecting acupuncture. She was open, but hesitant about herbal medicine since she had never used it before.
Her schedule was also a major factor. Between full-time work and two young children, frequent in-office treatments weren’t realistic at the intensity her case ideally required.
After a long consultation, we decided to start with a one-month herbal medicine plan.
She didn’t commit to anything long-term at that point. She simply agreed to try it and see how her body responded.
The main pattern we discussed was this: when the body is not moving fluid and energy efficiently, symptoms like bloating, puffiness, fatigue, cravings, and weight changes often appear together.
Rather than treating each symptom separately, Chinese herbal medicine focuses on restoring function so the system can regulate itself again.
SYMPTOMS AT INTAKE
Alongside bloating and fatigue, she was also experiencing:
- Constipation and incomplete bowel movements
- Night sweats
- Jaw clenching
- Occasional blurry vision
- Anxiety and high stress
- Recurrent UTIs (about once per month)
- Sugar cravings
- Emotional sensitivity before her cycle
- Strong self-critical thoughts
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this cluster of symptoms often points to a combination of digestive stagnation, nervous system overload, and difficulty regulating internal balance.
PROGRESS: FIRST 5 DAYS ON HERBAL MEDICINE
Within five days of starting her herbal formula, she reported feeling noticeably different. After just a few days, the patient reported feeling “amazing.” She was in shock that she was using the bathroom almost daily. She was very compliant, taking herbs with her everywhere and never missing a dose.
- Bloating and puffiness improved by ~30%
- Bowel movements became almost daily
- Night sweats improved by ~30%
- Fatigue improved by ~20%
One of the most important early signs in herbal medicine is digestion and elimination improving quickly. When the body starts processing and clearing more efficiently, other symptoms often begin to shift soon after.
At this stage, we kept the formula the same and monitored response.
PROGRESS: TWO WEEKS
By week two, progress continued but stabilized into a steadier pace:
- Bloating remained ~30% improved
- Bowel movements became more complete (~30% improvement)
- Fatigue improved by ~40%
- Night sweats improved by ~50%, with several nights fully symptom-free
We also introduced ear seeds to support appetite regulation and stress response.
Interestingly, she noticed that the knee popping she had been experiencing stopped completely after treatment. Initially, the patient was skeptical of ear seeds and the knee no longer popping was so mind blowing to her! She went from skeptical to a true believer in a short time. Also, this patient is very compliant, never missing a dose. We had also discussed because she eats so much sushi, she should stop eating salads as often. She needs more warm, cooked foods to counter all the sushi she eats when entertaining.
Additional changes included:
- No recurrence of UTI symptoms
- Reduced sugar cravings
- One episode of chest tightness during a high-stress day, which led to an adjustment in her herbal formula
At this point, we also discussed something important: healing is not linear. The body often responds quickly at first, then shifts into deeper layers of regulation.
PROGRESS: ONE MONTH
By the end of the first month, the patient reported feeling significantly better overall.
- Bloating and puffiness reduced by ~30%
- Fatigue improved by ~40%
- Night sweats improved by ~50%+
- Digestive regularity significantly improved
- Stress response more stable overall
She chose to continue into a full four-month structured program.
At this stage, we also shifted the focus from short-term symptom relief to long-term stability.
Because her lifestyle includes frequent social meals and occasional alcohol, we built a plan to support her body proactively around those events rather than reacting afterward. We continued to talk about lifestyle adjustments like drinking more water to counter the alcohol intake. Drinking more water before going to an event, and water during the event. Keeping water at her bedside, on her desk, and in her purse, to help her not forget.
This is a key part of treatment in real life — not avoiding life, but supporting the body through it.

PROGRESS: FOURTH VISIT
By her fourth visit, improvements were more stable and integrated:
- Bloating: ~50% improvement
- Bowel movements: daily and more complete (~70% improvement)
- Fatigue: ~40% improvement
- Night sweats: resolved (~70% improvement)
- Jaw clenching: ~50% improvement
- UTIs: no recurrence (~70% improvement)
- Sugar cravings: significantly reduced
- Chest tightness: resolved
Her knee symptoms returned slightly when ear seed support was skipped, reinforcing how interconnected the system is.
We also adjusted her herbal formula again in anticipation of her menstrual cycle to support emotional and hormonal regulation.
WHAT THIS CASE SHOWS
What’s important here isn’t just symptom improvement.
It’s the pattern underneath it.
When digestion begins to regulate, energy improves. When energy improves, stress tolerance increases. When stress decreases, hormonal and immune symptoms often stabilize.
In other words, the body doesn’t improve in isolated pieces. It improves as a system.
This is why many people don’t get lasting results when they only treat one symptom at a time — they never address how everything is connected.
CONCLUSION
At the end of her first month, this patient had already experienced meaningful changes in bloating, energy, digestion, sleep, and stress response.
She still has three months left in her program, where we will continue building stability, resilience, and long-term regulation.
But even this early phase shows something important:
When the body is supported consistently with the right structure, change can happen faster than most people expect.
READY TO START FEELING BETTER?
If you see yourself in this case study — bloating, fatigue, digestive issues, stress, or symptoms that seem unrelated but persistent — this is exactly the kind of situation where we start with a full evaluation and map out what your body actually needs.
Instead of guessing, we look at the full picture: digestion, energy, hormones, stress, and lifestyle patterns.
From there, we build a clear starting point and treatment plan.
